Calculate a Tariff

The Tariff Calculator estimates the import charges for one catalog item and shipment scenario.

Before you begin

The item must have:

  • an HTS commodity code;
  • a country of origin; and
  • access through the active tenant.

An administrator must also have published a tariff set containing an effective rule for the destination, origin, and HTS code.

Run a calculation

  1. Open COMPLIANCE and select Tariff Calculator.
  2. Select the item or enter its Item ID.
  3. Enter the destination country code.
  4. Enter the customs value in the currency you will select.
  5. Select or enter the currency code.
  6. Enter the expected import date, or leave the current date in place.
  7. Select Calculate tariff.

COMPLIANCE retrieves the item's HTS code and origin from the item catalog. Users cannot override those values in the calculation.

Read the result

Result Meaning
Customs value Value used as the basis for the calculation.
Duty rate and amount Duty percentage selected by the matching rule and its calculated amount.
Import-tax rate and amount Tax applied to the customs value plus duty.
Total import charges Duty plus import tax.
Landed value Customs value plus total import charges.
Tariff set and rule Versioned schedule records that produced the result.

Duty is rounded to two decimal places. Import tax is calculated on the customs value plus duty and is also rounded to two decimal places.

COMPLIANCE does not perform currency conversion. For example, if the request identifies USD, the customs value and every returned amount are treated as USD.

When no rule matches

A calculation can return No applicable tariff rule when no published, effective rule matches the item's HTS code, origin, destination, and import date. Verify the item classification and request values. An administrator may need to create or update a tariff rule.

Conflicting rules at the same priority return a conflict instead of selecting a rate silently. An administrator must resolve the overlap before the calculation can complete.
